DESCRIPTION:The Department of Digital Humanities and Social Studies wo
uld like to invite you to the following talk in our DH Colloquium: Hyu
nsook Kim: »Nam June Paik’s A Tribute to John Cage: Linking Data in
Contemporary Art Using Semantic Principles« Abstract Standardized me
tadata and terminology frameworks in the field of art often struggle t
o capture the complex contextual dimensions around artworks and artist
 s. While these standards are essential for ensuring consistency and in
teroperability between data\, they limit expressive depth and diversit
 y. To address this\, the semantic principle\, which links heterogeneou
s data and enables knowledge extension\, offers a potential solution t
o these challenges. This study examines how semantic based models such
as CIDOC CRM and LIDO Schema can enrich contextual representation wit
hin existing frameworks. Through a case study focusing on a specific a
 rtwork\, Nam June Paik&#8217\;s A Tribute to John Cage\, I evaluate th
e applicability of this approach\, identify practical challenges\, and
appropriate strategies for effective semantic integration in the fiel
d of art. Further information and other upcoming talks in the Colloqui
 um can be found here.
