Student projects

Under this heading (Student Projects), you will find general information on the structure of project and practical modules in the various degree programs at DHSS. Specific information can be found on the corresponding subpages.

General information

Practice-oriented project work that combines subject-specific knowledge with digital methodological approaches is an important component of degree programs in digital humanities and social sciences. Therefore, all degree programs at the DHSS include modules that focus on the self-directed implementation of project ideas. These experiences are also intended to be available as part of student traineeships and student assistant positions, but are always based on (1) a digital-technological intervention, which (2) must be examined in terms of its impact on the respective (professional) field of application and society in general.

The practical or project module is scheduled for the fourth semester of the BA Digitale Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften program, and the team project for the MA Digital Humanities is scheduled for the second and third semesters. The goal of each module is to gain practical experience in a program-related professional field or in a relevant application-oriented project.

It must be completed either as part of an internship in a professional field related to the degree program or as part of an independent project. This can be freely chosen or completed in the context of a student assistant position or a suitable seminar.

Further questions regarding organization and credit transfer can also be directed to the program advisory service.

Choice between external or internal practical experience

Possible internships can be completed in the following professional fields, among others:

  • in publishing/journalism (e-publishing and digital markets),
  • Journalism (online media, social media),
  • Museum and archive (image/work annotation, databases), – public relations and cultural mediation (Internet and new media),
  • Adult education (e-learning),
  • and the like.

Project seminars focus on the program-specific areas of language and text, society and space, and image and media. Using exemplary projects, students explore the independent application and development of IT tools in the humanities and social sciences.

Process of a practical / project module

In general, the process is similar across all modules, regardless of where and how the module is completed. Detailed information on the requirements for a project, both formally and content-wise, can be found at the following link:dh-projektmodul

Find a field in the digital humanities and social sciences that interests you. Feel free to also seek out external institutions that offer the best working conditions for your project work. For internal projects at FAU, it’s worth taking a look at the project display with project ideas from potential supervisors.

Regardless of whether you complete the project at an external institution or at FAU, you will need to be supervised by an authorized examiner at FAU. This person will supervise and advise you, in particular, on the following points:
  • Voting on a project topic. Please note that we cannot guarantee that project work started without voting can be accepted later!
  • Continuous support of project work, especially regarding feasibility and time management. We also offer special events for this purpose at DHSS every semester.

You are free to choose your supervisor from the lecturers of the program.

The assessment for this module consists of documentation and reflection on the practical work. This is done in the form of a project report (approximately 20 pages). The content and format are to be agreed upon with the supervisor when agreeing on the project topic.

300 hours of work (internship: 4-6 weeks / project: 4-6 weeks full-time)

The effort refers to the independent project work plus the preparation of the required project report in addition to any existing student work or temporary employment within the framework of which the project work is carried out.

Admission possible in summer and winter semesters

After reviewing the examination, the authorized examiner at FAU enters the examination results in campo.
