The bachelor’s thesis marks the completion of the bachelor’s degree program “Digital Humanities and Social Sciences.” Students are free to choose their topic and supervisor. Topic selection and coordination with supervisors are the students’ responsibility. The topic can be chosen following the seminars of the 5th semester or from an independent idea.
Below you will find all the important information regarding bachelor’s theses. In addition to general requirements, you will find information from the examination office and detailed instructions for writing your bachelor’s thesis – from registration to submission.
- According to the study plan, the bachelor’s thesis is part of the 6th semester and is written within a period of three months.
- The processing time is 3 months from the date of registration.
- The date of topic assignment entered on the registration form is decisive for the start of the processing period.
- An extension of the processing period can only be requested at the examination office by stating valid reasons.
- The primary supervisor of a bachelor’s thesis must be a university professor.
- The bachelor’s thesis is written in the student’s primary subject. Upon application to the examination office, it is possible to write the bachelor’s thesis in the secondary subject.

- Information on the formal requirements for a bachelor’s thesis, the assignment of topics, the extension of the processing time, submission and evaluation can be found in the currently valid “General Study and Examination Regulations” .
- Specific requirements are regulated by the examination regulations for the Bachelor’s degree program “Digital Humanities and Social Sciences” .
- The registration of the bachelor’s thesis takes place in consultation with the supervisor.
- Registration is only possible using the form “Application for Bachelor’s Thesis Registration” .
- The form must be signed by the primary caregiver and submitted to the office of the institution where the primary caregiver works.
- The “ General Study and Examination Regulations for the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programs of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Department of Theology of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg ” stipulate the following for the submission of the Bachelor’s thesis:
“The work must be submitted to the examination office during opening hours in two printed copies and in a machine-readable electronic version . The examination office will immediately inform the supervisor of the submission date and forward the work to them.” (§ 32 para. 7 or § 38 para. 5)
The written copies must be bound.
The machine-readable electronic form can be stored on a USB stick or a CD.
- Please also note the information on the contact pages of your supervisors – some additionally require submission via email or web form.
- Please also inform the study program coordinator Christian Sandig (MA) about the submission of your work (including the title and supervisor(s) of your bachelor’s thesis).
- The bachelor’s thesis should be 38-42 pages long. Pages shorter or longer than this can result in a grade deduction.
- Consistency must be ensured when citing sources!
- Formal design of the work:
- Cover page, table of contents, abstract, main text, bibliography, appendices, truthful declaration.
- The page numbering begins on the first page of content with the page number “1”.
- Font and font size: Times New Roman (12 point) or Arial (10 point),
- Line spacing in the text (1.5 times), line spacing in the footnote (1 cm)
- Side margins: 3 cm left and right, 2 cm top and bottom.
- Justified text with automatic hyphenation.
- Headings are hierarchically separated; all headings are listed in the table of contents.
- Formal design of the cover page:
- Name, Student ID, University Email Address
- Title of the Bachelor thesis
- Examiner (Supervisor)
- Date of submission of the examination performance
- The cover page is visible when the work is closed. Please use a transparent cover on the front that clearly identifies the work. Colored cardstock is only permitted on the back.
