Examination regulations and legal basis

Legal basis for the BA degree program Digital Humanities and Social Sciences

The course of study and examination requirements are governed by the General Study and Examination Regulations for the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Department of Theology (ABMStPO/Phil). These regulations are supplemented by the Subject-Specific Examination Regulations (FPO) for the “BA Digital Humanities and Social Sciences” program. For imported modules from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the respective ABMStPO of those faculties and their corresponding subject-specific examination regulations apply.

According to § 9 para. 2 sentences 7-9 ABMStPO/Phil the following regulations apply to the examination period:

Examinations, with the exception of term papers and oral exams, generally take place within the eight-week examination period. This period is divided into two sections: two weeks before and two weeks after the end of lectures in a semester , during which the first attempts are taken; and two weeks before and two weeks after the start of lectures in the following semester, during which resit exams for the first attempts of the respective examination period are offered. Different examination periods may apply to exams offered by other faculties.

The current lecture and semester periods can be found here on the FAU homepage.

Registration for exams takes place via Campo . The registration period will also be announced there. (Information on registration periods for exams at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities can also be found on the Examinations Office website .)

The portal displays an overview of the required modules and their corresponding exams. If you have difficulty selecting the exam numbers, please contact the instructors or the academic advisors .

  1. You can withdraw from exams without giving a reason up to three working days (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) before the exam date. Withdrawal is done via Campo . Withdrawal irrevocably cancels your registration; you can only register for and participate in the exam again in a later semester.
  2. Furthermore, you may withdraw from any exam (even after the 3-day deadline has passed) for valid reasons. These include illness, which you must document with a medical certificate and the corresponding  form submitted to the examination office (see Section 13, Paragraph 3, Sentence 4, ABMStPO/Phil). Please also note the examination office’s instructions regarding the required content of a medical certificate.
Withdrawal before the exam is also possible in justified exceptional cases: If you are prevented from taking the exam on the scheduled day for reasons beyond your control (e.g., traffic jam, accident, or public transport disruption), you must inform the examination office immediately; otherwise, the exam attempt will be graded as failing (see Section 17, Paragraph 1, ABMPO). The reasons must be credibly explained to the examination office (in the form of supporting documents, etc.).
If you become ill during an exam, you may terminate the exam attempt prematurely. In this case, you must consult an FAU-designated medical officer immediately (see Section 13, Paragraph 3, Sentence 6, ABMStPO/Phil). An information sheet and a list of FAU-designated medical officers can be found  here .
IMPORTANT: If you complete the exam as scheduled, you confirm that you were healthy and fit to take the exam – a retroactive hardship application (even with medical certificates, etc.) is generally not possible.

Examination matters are regulated by the examination office .

Key qualifications

The recognition of key qualifications is generally the responsibility of your primary subject. This subject decides which courses can be recognized as key qualifications. For the Digital Humanities and Social Sciences, all courses marked as “Suitable for key qualifications” in Campo are eligible for recognition. However, if you are studying a different subject as your primary subject, please consult with the academic advisor for your chosen course before registering.

Credit for completed courses in the Digital Humanities and Social Sciences

Starting in the summer semester of 2020, we will no longer issue certificates for courses we offer. It is your responsibility to register for the correct exams in a timely manner. Should any problems arise, please contact the academic advising office immediately . If you fail to register or register incorrectly, you are responsible for correcting the error yourself.

Crediting of services

If you have completed coursework that is thematically equivalent to courses in our curriculum (e.g., from previous studies or via the Virtual University of Bavaria (VHB) ), you can apply for credit transfer. To do so, please submit the application for credit transfer, which you can find on the Examinations Office website , along with supporting documents (transcript of records, copies of certificates, etc.) and information on which module in your degree program you would like credit transferred to, to the credit transfer coordinator for your degree program (see Academic Advising ). If you completed the coursework at another university, please attach the corresponding module descriptions from the semester in which you attended the courses.

  • Please report any illness directly to the examination office!
  • Leave of absence from studies etc.  (Link to the student administration website)

Students whose ability to study is limited due to a chronic illness or disability may be eligible to apply for accommodations for exams. Further information can be found  on the FAU’s advising page .

In computer science, specific guidelines apply due to the particular requirements. Information on assessment guidelines for group, team, and individual work (e.g., programming assignments) can be found  on the computer science department’s website .

In humanities and social science courses, plagiarism (unattributed use of individual sentences or complete copies) is always considered intellectual theft/attempted fraud and will have corresponding consequences. Violations of the rules of good academic practice will be reported to the program director and, if necessary, to higher authorities. In any case, the work will be graded as “fail.”
