The article “»[…] nicht die Ausnahme, sondern der Normalfall [!]« Die digitale Lücke in der Kunstgeschichte und Provenienzforschung” by Sabine Lang was published in the Zeitschrift für digitale Geisteswissenschaften.

“Art historians and provenance researchers use databases almost daily. By doing so, they are not only confronted with what is present but also with what is missing. The following article studies digital gaps in the context of art history and provenance research and specifically asks for types and causes. Based on a study of various databases and a digital method, types of digital gaps are identified and recorded in an (expandable) typology. In the following section, the article addresses causes for gaps to determine if they are a result of already incomplete analog sources, digital methods or other factors. A key finding is that missing resources generate gaps. The article concludes with a discussion of the importance of gaps in the digital space, and whether gaps can have positive qualities as well.” (Abstract)
