What can digital methods reveal about the works of J. R. R. Tolkien? This course uses texts including The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion to explore textual modelling, metadata, annotation, copyright, narrative analysis, style and register variation, Linked Open Data and complex textual histories. Students gain hands-on experience applying computational methods to literary texts and textual traditions. -
Designed for students with introductory programming experience, this course puts Python skills into practice using humanities and social-science materials. Students work with files, text encoding, regular expressions, CSV, JSON, XML and TEI data, as well as data manipulation and visualisation. The course also introduces good practices in project organisation, version control, documentation and reproducible research. -

How are digital technologies changing the ways we study culture, history and society? This introductory course provides a foundation in Digital Humanities by familiarising students with key approaches, questions, methods and data types. Students will also explore the history of DH and develop essential academic skills for further study in the field. Eingefügter Text -
This course introduces students to core methods of data visualisation in Digital Humanities. Alongside practical exercises, students learn how to translate research questions into visual analyses, choose appropriate visualisation methods, critically evaluate existing visualisations and understand how design choices influence interpretation and communication. -
From historical newsreels to contemporary TikTok videos, audiovisual materials shape how culture and society are communicated. This course explores the development of audiovisual culture and introduces computational methods for analysing audiovisual material. Students combine theoretical perspectives with hands-on assignments and critically assess both digital methods and their results. -
The AI Reading Club offers a space to engage critically with current research in artificial intelligence. Through the close reading and discussion of research papers, students can explore emerging approaches, concepts and debates in AI while developing confidence in reading and evaluating academic research. -
How can machine learning help us explore cultural collections? This course introduces students to ways of working computationally with digitised cultural materials and considers how machine-learning methods can support the analysis, organisation and interpretation of cultural collections.

What does it mean to transform texts, images or objects into data? This seminar explores the theoretical, ethical and practical dimensions of data collection in Digital Humanities. Students engage with concepts such as data and capta, FAIR and CARE principles, accessibility, metadata standards and licensing before developing their own data collection project and data-management strategy. -
