The conference „Ähnlichkeit und Methode: Digitale Perspektiven für die Arbeit mit historischem Bildmaterial statt“ took place at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel between October 11th and October 13th. The term similarity and possible similarity dimensions were discussed by various disciplines, such as art history and archaeology. In particular, methods for image recognition, which enable searches for identical and similar images in big data collections, have been presented and critically examined regarding their potentials, challenges and risks.

Sabine Lang presented a paper on „Einblicke in den Kunstmarkt: Das Potential computergestützter Bildsuchverfahren für die Recherche in Auktionskatalogen“, which highlighted the potential of computational image search methods for art market research and in particular for the reconstruction of an object’s provenance. These methods were tested on digitized pages from historical auction and sales catalogues, which were produced between 1901 and 1945 and contain numerous images. The talk presented results from a project, which was carried out in cooperation between the DHSS and the Chair for Pattern Recognition at the FAU.
